– Located just 4.2 miles east of Lincoln, Montana, Cane Ridge West is our conference and retreat center. The lodge was patterned after the original church building which still exists, in Paris Kentucky, approx. 25 miles east of Lexington. The original log structure, pictured at right, was built in 1791. During the Civil War, a member of the church disassembled the church and stored the logs in his barn, to prevent its destruction; then it was restored after the War. Daniel Boone actually coined the phrase “cane ridge;” immediately west of the original structure there once was a stretch of cane growth ~~ the same cane as is used in fishing poles, 1 mile wide and 18 miles long.

Cane Ridge West was dedicated on September 1, 1984, and is in use every week of the year by many different groups. The Christian Church in Montana (Disciples of Christ) hosts the Congress of Christians, each Labor Day weekend. A large red and white wooden chalice marks the entry on Stone-Campbell Drive, near milepost # 76. Come join us!

Approx. 400 Christians attended the dedication ceremonies in 1984 and signed the “logs,” below; the festivities included several “old-time” stump sermons.

In the photos below, Rev. Tom Devitt (formerly of First Christian Church in Helena) baptizes Jim Elshoff in the Blackfoot River, at left. On the right, Rev. Fred Dorisse (formerly of Central Christian Church in Great Falls) baptized his daughter. On dedication day, 5 of us were baptized.

Each Labor Day, we host a special national speaker. Among those who have honored us with their words in the past are Rev. Rhodes Thompson, Jr. (left), and former General Minister and President, William Nicholls, at right.

Sunday evening at the Congress of Christians is a fun time. Those interested (and brave enough) will display their talents, such as singing, reciting poetry, or a quickly-contrived skit. Below are pictured Steve Betts, Music Director at First Christian Church in Helena, and Kathy McKerrow, Regional Secretary, Great Falls.

In the photos below, attendees from our summer camps pose for pictures. Junior camp, Chi Rho, and CYF each enjoy a week of fellowship and study.
